Chemnitz Picnic Concert
August 23, 2026, 11:00 a.m.
Industrial Museum – Outdoor Grounds, Chemnitz
Industrial steam and idyllic nature—a contradiction? Not in Chemnitz, where the Robert Schumann Philharmonic, together with members of the opera chorus, once again welcome audiences to the traditional picnic concert in the green oasis behind the Chemnitz Industrial Museum. The rush for coveted spots on the lawn in recent years has shown that the tradition of the "picnic"—supposedly a uniquely English custom first mentioned in the mid-18th century by a certain Lord Chesterfield, who described it as a "merry gathering"—is cultivated with great enthusiasm in Chemnitz. Whether it’s a simple folding cushion, a picnic blanket, a folding chair, or a colorfully set camping table; whether you’re keeping it casual with a shatterproof plastic cup or doing it in style with a champagne flute—the main thing is to be right where the music is playing! And once that packed picnic basket is opened, nothing stands in the way of a relaxed Sunday morning.
Musicians from the Robert Schumann Philharmonic will be staffing an "OdW" information booth—complete with an ice cream machine, a book table, and a raffle—so come on by!
