What happens when farmers and orchestral musicians listen to one another? In the summer of 2023, farmers and musicians from the Nuremberg State Philharmonic (Staatsphilharmonie Nürnberg) met at the Rengoldshausen estate near Lake Constance—engaging in conversations out in the fields, performing a concert in a cowshed, and, ultimately, presenting Beethoven’s "Pastoral" Symphony under the open sky. The film "Conductors of the Soil" tells the stories of farmers who are working to restore the threatened fertility of our land, exploring what living humus means for our own health and that of the Earth. Over the course of several years, the Bio-Stiftung Schweiz (Organic Foundation Switzerland)—through its Soil Fertility Fund—has supported with measurable success around 30 farms in enhancing the vitality of their soil. In collaboration with PhilForNature—a sustainability initiative led by musicians from the Nuremberg State Philharmonic—this project has resulted in a film that does not merely issue warnings, but moreover inspires hope. Its message is: "We are not powerless. We can renew the partnership between humanity and the Earth—and it is already happening."
Following the film, musicians from the Nuremberg State Philharmonic (PhilForNature) will perform live, succeeded by a panel discussion on the topic.
