Chemnitz Benefit Concert

With this benefit concert, musicians from the Robert Schumann Philharmonic aim to raise funds for Orchester des Wandels e.V.. Two wonderful works by Debussy and Mendelssohn will be performed.

This year marks the centenary of the premiere of Claude Debussy’s Trio for Flute, Viola, and Harp. A connection to nature is evoked through the instruments' many distinctive timbres and playing techniques—including the shimmering, wind-like sounds of the flute and viola, as well as harmonics (natural overtones) played on the viola and harp.

The following verses by Goethe, from the Walpurgis Night scene in Part One of *Faust*, served as the motto for the airy Scherzo of Mendelssohn’s Octet, composed when he was just sixteen:

“Drifting clouds and veils of mist
Are brightened from above.
Air in the leaves and wind in the reeds;
And all is dispersed.”

Admission is free, and the musicians of the Robert Schumann Philharmonic are forgoing performance fees.
