A Fantasy in Pictures

MAY 1, 2022 11:00 a.m.
LÜBECK Music and Congress Center

In conjunction with the Convention »GO.GRØØN«

The name “Orchester des Wandels” ("Orchestra of Change") not only stands for ecological or social change, but also for the change in the musical landscape. After a small series of successful concerts "Sound Worlds of Nature" in cooperation with the Museum for Nature and the Environment, the Lübeck Philharmonic continues to experiment with concert formats. This time not only acoustically and informatively, but also visually and humorously: Before the eyes of the audience, comic artist Joshua Held (who created cartoons at the Lübeck Theater for the projects "The Journey to Reims" and "The Barber of Seville") will actively sketch on a white screen during the concert. Music and opera director of the Theater Lübeck, Stefan Vladar, conducts the orchestra in a program with well-known works that directly address the topic of nature. In addition, the scientist Dr. Nadine Mengis takes a look into the future with short scientific lectures to set our imaginations in motion.

What will our world look like in 2050? This question served as the starting point for the team of scientists from the Helmholz Climate Initiative in their recent research. To put it more precisely: What does climate-neutral Germany look like, in which so-called CO2 neutrality (net zero) becomes a reality? Net zero means that all man-made greenhouse gas emissions are removed from the atmosphere again through reduction measures, so that the earth's climate balance is, after deductions from natural and artificial reductions, zero. Energy transition, technological progress, and new ways of dealing with natural mechanisms of CO2 removal contribute to this result. In her short lectures, Dr. Nadine Mengis will describe in an accessible way the measures and technologies that can have a long-term effect on our climate.

This optimistic prospect inspired Joshua Held to visually interpret the musical program with his special wit and fine musicality. What are we hoping for? What kind of world do we imagine? What can we do? Fantasize with us!

After the concert, you will have the opportunity to visit the information stand of the "Orchester des Wandels", give your feedback and experience Joshua Held's freshly drawn pictures in a small exhibition. Dr. Nadine Mengis will also be available to answer your questions.
